Take Control of Your Attitude

“A Beautiful Mind”  A great movie.  I’m not here to talk about the movie though, but the mind itself.  There are many articles, books and videos on the subject of the power of the mind, what we can accomplish with the right mind-set and attitude.  Staying positive and what we need to do to achieve this.

How many books have you read, videos watched or even attended seminars on personal development, mind-set, success principles?  You’ve come out feeling radiant, warm and full of positiveness, saying  ‘wow, that was brilliant’, or passing that book on you’ve just finished reading – twice – because it was just, again, wow I want some of that.  Well, you can have it …

You need to ask yourself  -

  1. What did I take away from the experience?  and
  2. What am I going to do about it?

You READ the book right, you were LISTENING to the speaker, because they were telling you HOW – your job now is to DO!

Recently Will Edwards sent me an invitation to join a webinar hosted by Julianna Raye, a trainer in `Being Zen and Basic Mindfulness’.  After the webinar, I read and watched a couple of further reports on the topic and thought this really is powerful stuff.  Now, I’ve been doing mediation for some time but after learning about ‘Basic Mindfulness’, I could see I was really missing out.

a)  I wasn’t practicing regularly on a daily basis and
b)  I wasn’t understanding the whole concept enough to be able to achieve the full benefits meditation gives.

Sea shellWith some understanding and regular practice you can train your mind to adopt the attitude you choose in any situation to amazing degrees.  A little example;  a couple of weeks ago I found myself in a situation where I would have normally flipped out, got into a tither, got upset and then later probably have laughed at myself thinking what an idiot I was for over reacting like that.  Instead, my reaction was the total opposite, I was calm and saw an immediate solution to the problem at hand, then later praising myself for keeping my cool.

So, how did I manage this?  I chose the attitude I wanted to adopt to the situation.  The wonderful thing about it was, I did it without consciously thinking about it, without that – deep breath in count to 10 – breath out.  And, this was just after my first week with training and daily practice.  I’ve only hit the surface!

I’m not saying everyone should take up meditation – would be a calmer world if we did – but, next time you attend a seminar, watch a video or read a book on ‘how to’, if it’s what you want – then set your mind to it and do it!

The last of human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances ~ Victor Frankl

I’m going to leave you now with a song.
So … relax, close your eyes and hear the music … Note
